Toilet - Master Bathroom

After the kitchen, this toilet was the next in line that made us spent many agonising hours.   Ignoring the pipes, the space was limited and I wanted so much to have a proper shower area with shower screen and a wash basin area for our items.

ifp is a fellow Renotalk member who has the similar layout and showed us what they had done.  On the 3D drawing, it looked cramped.  But, seeing that it was possible, on 3D drawing, we went ahead to execute it.  

Previous shower area was divided into two.  Wide on each side was 750mm, which was good enough.
We put in a 4inch ledge so that all the bottles and tubes can go onto it.  This was something we did before in our previous house and we loved it.  Never thought that it would create some problems here.



First was quite major.  As I had written before, the ledge took up space for the wash basin area.  The result was that we had to cancel our orders and scrambled to find a smaller basin to fit.  

Second was that we had to stand a little closer to the shower tap because the rain shower mounted on top was now 10cm in recess.

Was glad that our ID had given us a thicker glass with metal support on top.  What we usually see in magazines are thin and frameless.  Since we planned to use it for a long time, better go with one that is sturdier.

And then, it was another two weeks before we could use this bathroom, because the plumber cracked the tiles while trying to install the basin.  We had to wait for the tiler to come and fix the tiles.  On hearing our plight with the plumber, our carpenter volunteered to bring back the sink and customised the cabinet so that the sink can sit on it instead of mounting to the wall.




Another few days for the guys to come in and complete the quartz table top.


With this configuration, there are now enough space for daily functions and enough storage (actually, lots of storage!).

Very happy with the result.

I mulled over this before the installation.  Came the time to install, we just went along with what our carpenter suggested. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! After a month in the kitchen, I have hit it at no less than five times and from all sides.  I should now be able to answer this with some authority: how should the hood be positioned?  Here's the definitive guide. It's all about the height. First, there is a constraint you have to work with: the maximum distance between hob and hood. For my Fujioh hood, the separation distance should be within 800mm. Second, determine the height of the hob.  It should be around 800mm to 900mm, depending on your height and what you are comfortable with. My HDB 4 Room, 4A Floor Plan

To start things off, this is the floor plan. This development is 30 years old.  However, it had just been upgraded with new lifts.  First of all, we liked the location:  it is an area we knew well, and it is just a short distance away to MRT, shops, Community Centre and parks and yet shielded from the main road by one other block.  Secondly, we loved the size.  The older flats had a slightly larger area and higher ceiling.  The Living room is really spacious with a squarish layout that we like.  The two bedrooms for our children are of good size:  enough room for a full size wardrobe, bed and writing desk. We are less enthusiastic about the toilets.  They are really really small.  Kitchen is just about right while the Master bedroom size is ok, we didn't like it that the door is facing the Kitchen. Response time of HDB's general enquiry...you will be surprised!

There is this additional pipe in the toilet which no one had a clue what it was for.  Can we get rid of it? Who else better to ask than HDB?  I couldn't find a contact point for renovation questions so I tried the general email contact:  hdb@mailbox.hdb.gov.sg . I don't think I have had much good experience with emailing to general enquiry of any organisation to talk about.  In this case, I too, have forgotten about it as soon as I sent it. The email was sent on a Friday night at almost 10pm.  The following Tuesday morning, I got a call at 9am from Don, a representative from HDB saying he would be in my unit at 11am to have a look. Don was there at 11am.  After surveying, he said it is part of sewage pipe system from older design.  Only a some units in certain floors have it and I was one of the lucky ones.  And no, it cannot be dismantled.
