Plumbing Part 2 -- Fixing the basins and pipes

The company that my ID engaged for doing the plumbing work was quite a big company.  So I requested for a different group to come down to fix the issues.

They sent down a guy called Ah Meng, late 30s?  He worked alone and fixed the tilted washbasin in the common toilet.



He also help to put in switches below the washbasins and shower heads.


Something I thought was a standard but then they made you ask for it.

All cold water pipes leading to faucets SHOULD be fitted with a switch.  If not, when you need to change the faucet or when it breaks, you will have to run outside to switch off the main supply to the entire house.  

Hot water pipes only requires a single on/off switch next to the exit point on the hot water tank.

At the same time, he also helped to put in the rest of the racks and hooks to the wall.  All went well without a hitch.

A second group came later in the week to change the pipes.

Other than just look 'nicer' it also fixed another issue:

Hot water pipes should be at the bottom and on the inside for safety reason.  How do I know this?  The bunch that installed it told me.  And yet, they installed it with the hot water pipe running 'outside' (see the before pic).

This second group was also a bunch of young guys but they did a much better job.

    My husband and I have had varied experiences with plumbers over the years, and yes they do work differently from company to company. We have found it best to get good referrals, if it is at all possible. We have also found that working with smaller, individual plumbers has worked the best for us.

    Wow, you've done an awesome job of installing those pipes and washbasins. When we renovated our downstairs bathroom, we used the services of a plumbing firm who had been recommended to us. They did all of the difficult plumbing work, leaving us to focus on the cosmetics. I'm glad I had professional help, and now own a beautiful bathroom!

I mulled over this before the installation.  Came the time to install, we just went along with what our carpenter suggested. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! After a month in the kitchen, I have hit it at no less than five times and from all sides.  I should now be able to answer this with some authority: how should the hood be positioned?  Here's the definitive guide. It's all about the height. First, there is a constraint you have to work with: the maximum distance between hob and hood. For my Fujioh hood, the separation distance should be within 800mm. My HDB 4 Room, 4A Floor Plan

To start things off, this is the floor plan. This development is 30 years old.  However, it had just been upgraded with new lifts.  First of all, we liked the location:  it is an area we knew well, and it is just a short distance away to MRT, shops, Community Centre and parks and yet shielded from the main road by one other block.  Secondly, we loved the size.  The older flats had a slightly larger area and higher ceiling.  The Living room is really spacious with a squarish layout that we like.  The two bedrooms for our children are of good size:  enough room for a full size wardrobe, bed and writing desk. We are less enthusiastic about the toilets.  They are really really small.  Kitchen is just about right while the Master bedroom size is ok, we didn't like it that the door is facing the Kitchen. Response time of HDB's general enquiry...you will be surprised!

There is this additional pipe in the toilet which no one had a clue what it was for.  Can we get rid of it? Who else better to ask than HDB?  I couldn't find a contact point for renovation questions so I tried the general email contact:  hdb@mailbox.hdb.gov.sg . I don't think I have had much good experience with emailing to general enquiry of any organisation to talk about.  In this case, I too, have forgotten about it as soon as I sent it. The email was sent on a Friday night at almost 10pm.  The following Tuesday morning, I got a call at 9am from Don, a representative from HDB saying he would be in my unit at 11am to have a look. Don was there at 11am.  After surveying, he said it is part of sewage pipe system from older design.  Only a some units in certain floors have it and I was one of the lucky ones.  And no, it cannot be dismantled.
