Straightened the curve wall - now can mount a shower set.


What was good:

1. Straightening the curve wall.  Hehe...this was probably because the tiler was too lazy to cut the tiles to fit.  It turned out well.  Now we have a usable wall to mount the shower set.

2. Rain shower.  It might looked like an overkill, but having the water drops from the top reduces some splashing that might otherwise make this small toilet more messy.

What was not good:

1. Wall tiles were too big.  Small toilet should use small tiles.

2. Floor tiles were too big.  Or maybe ALL toilet floors should use smaller tiles.  Especially critical in order to properly direct water flow to the drainage opening: smaller tiles make it easier to make gradient changes.

3. Tile colours were wrong.  I would have preferred a lighter wall and darker floor.

4.  The drainage opening should be located at a corner away from the entrance.  So that you would be stepping on wet when you are getting in and out of the toilet.

I mulled over this before the installation.  Came the time to install, we just went along with what our carpenter suggested. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! After a month in the kitchen, I have hit it at no less than five times and from all sides.  I should now be able to answer this with some authority: how should the hood be positioned?  Here's the definitive guide. It's all about the height. First, there is a constraint you have to work with: the maximum distance between hob and hood. For my Fujioh hood, the separation distance should be within 800mm. Second, determine the height of the hob.  It should be around 800mm to 900mm, depending on your height and what you are comfortable with. The height of floor to hob in my case is 900mm and hob to hood is another 750mm making it a total height of 1650mm or 1.65m.  I am 1.75m tall and the hood is just at my eye level. My HDB 4 Room, 4A Floor Plan

To start things off, this is the floor plan. This development is 30 years old.  However, it had just been upgraded with new lifts.  First of all, we liked the location:  it is an area we knew well, and it is just a short distance away to MRT, shops, Community Centre and parks and yet shielded from the main road by one other block.  Secondly, we loved the size.  The older flats had a slightly larger area and higher ceiling.  The Living room is really spacious with a squarish layout that we like.  The two bedrooms for our children are of good size:  enough room for a full size wardrobe, bed and writing desk. We are less enthusiastic about the toilets.  They are really really small.  Kitchen is just about right while the Master bedroom size is ok, we didn't like it that the door is facing the Kitchen. Response time of HDB's general enquiry...you will be surprised!

There is this additional pipe in the toilet which no one had a clue what it was for.  Can we get rid of it? Who else better to ask than HDB?  I couldn't find a contact point for renovation questions so I tried the general email contact:  hdb@mailbox.hdb.gov.sg . I don't think I have had much good experience with emailing to general enquiry of any organisation to talk about.  In this case, I too, have forgotten about it as soon as I sent it. The email was sent on a Friday night at almost 10pm.  The following Tuesday morning, I got a call at 9am from Don, a representative from HDB saying he would be in my unit at 11am to have a look. Don was there at 11am.  After surveying, he said it is part of sewage pipe system from older design.  Only a some units in certain floors have it and I was one of the lucky ones.  And no, it cannot be dismantled.
