Kitchen Shopping -- Techno Hob and Hoob

Tecno was having a warehouse sales over the weekend and we went to take a look.

We had our eyes set on this:

It has good looks and ergonomics:  taller in front to give you good clearance for your head.  The noise level is low, even at the highest setting, it is relatively quiet than most.  There's time and alarm function.  Also important consideration for cleaning and maintenance: only have to deal with a single piece of steel mesh and carbon filter.

The offer was S$950 and you can pick any Tecno hob to go with it.  At this point in time, I believed anything less than a thousand for a chimney hood and a glass panel hob is a good deal.  However, the deal does not include delivery ($20-$40) and another $35 to add safety valves to the hob.  So all in all, it will still come to around $1000.  

We called up Goh Ah Bee (our usual 'go to' appliance store) to check the price and it was $1150.  Should we?  I decided that we should go back to Hoe Kee to take a look at the Fujioh that we had our sight on before we place our deposit.  

So off to Hoe Kee we went...

Cooker Hood -- What is the right height?

I mulled over this before the installation.  Came the time to install, we just went along with what our carpenter suggested. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! After a month in the kitchen, I have hit it at no less than five times and from all sides.  I should now be able to answer this with some authority: how should the hood be positioned?  Here's the definitive guide. It's all about the height. First, there is a constraint you have to work with: the maximum distance between hob and hood. For my Fujioh hood, the separation distance should be within 800mm. Second, determine the height of the hob.  It should be around 800mm to 900mm, depending on your height and what you are comfortable with. The height of floor to hob in my case is 900mm and hob to hood is another 750mm making it a total height of 1650mm or 1.65m.  I am 1.75m tall and the hood is just at my eye level. My HDB 4 Room, 4A Floor Plan

To start things off, this is the floor plan. This development is 30 years old.  However, it had just been upgraded with new lifts.  First of all, we liked the location:  it is an area we knew well, and it is just a short distance away to MRT, shops, Community Centre and parks and yet shielded from the main road by one other block.  Secondly, we loved the size.  The older flats had a slightly larger area and higher ceiling.  The Living room is really spacious with a squarish layout that we like.  The two bedrooms for our children are of good size:  enough room for a full size wardrobe, bed and writing desk. We are less enthusiastic about the toilets.  They are really really small.  Kitchen is just about right while the Master bedroom size is ok, we didn't like it that the door is facing the Kitchen. The house is quite well maintained.  The walls and cabinets are in quite a good condition.  I am quite sure we will want to keep the flooring.  Other things though will have to

Response time of HDB's general enquiry...you will be surprised!

There is this additional pipe in the toilet which no one had a clue what it was for.  Can we get rid of it? Who else better to ask than HDB?  I couldn't find a contact point for renovation questions so I tried the general email contact:  hdb@mailbox.hdb.gov.sg . I don't think I have had much good experience with emailing to general enquiry of any organisation to talk about.  In this case, I too, have forgotten about it as soon as I sent it. The email was sent on a Friday night at almost 10pm.  The following Tuesday morning, I got a call at 9am from Don, a representative from HDB saying he would be in my unit at 11am to have a look. Don was there at 11am.  After surveying, he said it is part of sewage pipe system from older design.  Only a some units in certain floors have it and I was one of the lucky ones.  And no, it cannot be dismantled.
