Retractable Cloth Hanger

We installed a retractable cloth hanger many years ago when we lived in a condo.   The product is called EZ Hi-Dry from EZZ Living.  You just pull it down and push it out.  The simple mechanism with hydraulics makes it simple and easy to operate.  We had no problem with it over 3 years of usage.

Visited the company this afternoon to see if we can find one to fit into our new home. 

The EZ Hi-Dri system is still available.  However, the price has gone up by at least 30%! 

For this round, we are just looking for a system whereby we can pull it down and up.  It should also come with longer poles than the Hi-Dri model.
The other manual types we saw use a system like in curtain blinds -- pull, disengage the stopper, release.  You are pulling on a thin string of plastic beads; I just cannot bring myself to trust that it will last.

As for the automated system, one comes with lights and the other has added fans and UV lights. 

What?  Why?  Why can't it be something simple? 

In the end, the one that is worth considering - solid build with long adjustable poles is the one that comes with all the bells and whistles and so determined to set you back $900.  

Ahh... I really don't wish to pay so much and I don't wish to have a motorised system.  No hurry... maybe we can find something better along the way.

I mulled over this before the installation.  Came the time to install, we just went along with what our carpenter suggested. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! After a month in the kitchen, I have hit it at no less than five times and from all sides.  I should now be able to answer this with some authority: how should the hood be positioned?  Here's the definitive guide. It's all about the height. First, there is a constraint you have to work with: the maximum distance between hob and hood. For my Fujioh hood, the separation distance should be within 800mm. Second, determine the height of the hob.  It should be around 800mm to 900mm, depending on your height and what you are comfortable with. My HDB 4 Room, 4A Floor Plan

To start things off, this is the floor plan. This development is 30 years old.  However, it had just been upgraded with new lifts.  First of all, we liked the location:  it is an area we knew well, and it is just a short distance away to MRT, shops, Community Centre and parks and yet shielded from the main road by one other block.  Secondly, we loved the size.  The older flats had a slightly larger area and higher ceiling.  The Living room is really spacious with a squarish layout that we like.  The two bedrooms for our children are of good size:  enough room for a full size wardrobe, bed and writing desk. We are less enthusiastic about the toilets.  They are really really small.  Kitchen is just about right while the Master bedroom size is ok, we didn't like it that the door is facing the Kitchen. Response time of HDB's general enquiry...you will be surprised!

There is this additional pipe in the toilet which no one had a clue what it was for.  Can we get rid of it? Who else better to ask than HDB?  I couldn't find a contact point for renovation questions so I tried the general email contact:  hdb@mailbox.hdb.gov.sg . I don't think I have had much good experience with emailing to general enquiry of any organisation to talk about.  In this case, I too, have forgotten about it as soon as I sent it. The email was sent on a Friday night at almost 10pm.  The following Tuesday morning, I got a call at 9am from Don, a representative from HDB saying he would be in my unit at 11am to have a look. Don was there at 11am.  After surveying, he said it is part of sewage pipe system from older design.  Only a some units in certain floors have it and I was one of the lucky ones.  And no, it cannot be dismantled.
